When Everything Is In The Public Domain You Better Be Legal, Clean and Decent!

Firstly some rough profiling on the uses social media and different communication platforms.

Increasingly we are seeing a workplace generational split in the way web based media and social networks are being used.
Its going like this – with apologies, and recognition of us perhaps reinforcing aged based stereotypes. And we also acknowledge there are significant exceptions.

People over the age of 40 have thoroughly adopted email and will use the web for web site research, intelligence gathering, albeit across a fairly narrow range and depth. Facebook presence largely limited to family and friends with highly restricted access. LinkedIn used by a minority .

People 25-40 same as above but with the addition of more intense use of Facebook and a higher take up of LinkedIn users, plus a smattering of twitter and blogs.

Under 25s are the so called digital natives, people who can’t remember anything other than bring totally connected to on-line and ‘always on communication. Interestingly the media profile is markedly different. Email (Elderly mail as some call it) is strictly for work only. Little LinkedIn or twitter, heavy use of Facebook and Instant messaging but also phone based text messaging. Their first response to wanting to know anything is to go on-line.

Skype is used across all the demography and is driven by distance and cost saving issues.

The most striking difference is the digital native’s view of privacy issues. They don’t worry about how the Facebook page can be viewed and resulting trail of photo’s wall postings and their latest (cool/rude/irreverent) status. It’s already becoming a truism that your profile can cost you your job (opportunity).

We are starting to see people develop two profiles, a work based one and a personal one. Celebrities like Stephen Fry already do this. Perhaps we’ll see LinkedIn used for work and Facebook for pleasure. What is certain is that peoples’ personal brand will become real collateral that will need to be managed, and if there are ‘nasties’ lurking on the web about your past, just hope prospective employers, partners, or the honours committee don’t find them!
